ANZAC Day is commemorated on 25th April and is one of the most important national commemorative occasions in Australia, marking the anniversary of the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand armed forces during World War One. Learning about ANZAC Day helps young children to understand the life and times of Australia and its people. The ceremony and traditions are such an integral part of our culture that it gives us an opportunity to talk to children about the importance of ANZAC Day.
ANZAC Day is an extremely significant day for Australians, who all recognise the importance of commemorating soldiers and, at the same time, promoting peace. Children, with their astute awareness of the world around them, will recognise that Anzac Day is significant, but many of us wonder how to appropriately explain the importance behind it. Therefore, at Inspired Early Learning we aim to use inclusive activities to encourage children’s awareness and understanding.
- Our Kookaburra’s children enjoyed creating our very own poppy flowers with red playdough and a variety of rocks, we also listened to one of our Kookaburra children share that their poppy is a Vietnam war hero, we learnt about the different medals that are awarded to our heroes and discovered their army green coloured uniform. Thank you “Poppy Mick” you are our hero.
- Our very clever Echidna’s created their very own poppy flowers using the colours red and black.
- Across the Centre our children read a variety of stories including ANZAC Ted and Lest we forget.
Why is it important for preschoolers to learn about and commemorate Anzac Day?
It’s important for children to continue to learn about Anzac Day, because it demonstrates the sacrifice the men and women took to protect our countries and to be grateful that soldiers were willing to give their lives so that people of today can live freely.
Discussing Anzac Day with children ensures that stories about Australia and New Zealand’s heroes and combined history are passed down to younger generations at a time when they are actively interested and engaged.
At Inspired Early Learning we believe discussing the history behind ANZAC Day, enables a child to develop a better understanding of the value and need for peace. We believe connecting our service and its people with community supports health and wellbeing.
We love exploring and learning about traditions including those that have a deep meaning to our families and their children. We celebrate diversity and encourage families to share with us their traditions, customs and important holidays.
