This approach is a student-centred self-guided curriculum that uses experiential learning environments.
At its centre this philosophy’s theory is that children form their own personality during the early years of development and that they are endowed with “a hundred languages” through which they can express their ideas.
We must credit the child with enormous potential and the children must feel that trust. The teacher must give up all preconceived notions and accept the child as a co-constructor.
~ Loris Malaguzzi
The Reggio Emilia philosophy is based upon the following set of principles:
- Children must have some control over the direction of their learning
- Children must be able to learn through experiences of touching, moving, listening and observing
- Children can explore relationships with other children and discover objects in the world around them
- Children must have endless ways and opportunities to express themselves
- Children are viewed as capable, competent and have endless possibilities in life
